Beauty is in the soul of the beholder: psychological implications of
beauty and African American women.
Hall CC.
ASU West, Phoenix 85069, USA.
The criteria for beauty in the United States are primarily based on Caucasian
European American, middle-class standards. African American women tend
to vary greatly from these criteria. Though very few studies have been
conducted on the body image of Black women in the United States, historically,
the physical images portrayed of African American women in the United
States have not been positive. Mental health practitioners must understand
how these negative images may affect the body image and self-esteem of
African American women. Therapeutic and community interventions are discussed.
