Hispanic experience of organ donation in New York City.
Transplant Proc 1993;25(4):2492-3.
This article presented data to show that, within the New York Regional
Transplant Program, Inc., the Hispanic community has become the strongest
donor racial group.
During the three years from 1990 to1992, Hispanics accounted for 43,
56, and 59 solid-organ donors respectively; Caucasians, who have traditionally
led donors in the NY/RTP service area, accounted for 60, 57 and 53 donors;
and blacks accounted for 38, 40, and 30 donors. The donor rates per million
population revealed that the Hispanic population surpassed both the Caucasian
and black community in donors during the 1990-1992 period. The rate per
million population for Hispanics ranged from 22.38 to 31.05; the rate
for the Caucasian population ranged for 11.52 to 13.10; and the rate for
the black population ranged from 15.00 to 19.73.
The authors argue that this pattern is at least partially due to utilizing
Hispanic requesters (those who ask families to donate the organs of their
family members) for the Hispanic population.
