Increasing African American organ donation: the St Louis experience.
Transplant Proc 1993;25(4):2489-90.
This paper describes a program supported by the Mid-America Transplant Association
that aimed to increase the proportion of organ donations from the African
American population. The project assumed that failure to adequately educate
the African American community about organ donation and a lack of sensitivity
to racial issues were the primary factors associated with poor participation
in organ donation. Thus, this program employed both a community educational
program targeted to the African American community and the use of African
American organ requesters. The article argues that, although both components
are necessary for the success of such a program, having African American
requesters was the factor that lead to the observed increase in consent
rates for donations in the latter years of this program.
