An assessment of the impact of the National Minority Organ Tissue Transplant
Education Program.
Transplant Proc 1996;28(1):394-7.
This article outlines the successes of the National Minority Organ Tissue
Transplant Education Program (MOTTEP). The development of MOTTEP stemmed
from the research initiated in 1982 by Dr. Clive O. Callender into those
behavioral factors that inhibit organ and tissue donations among African
Americans. The absolute number of African American donors, by several
indices, have increased by striking percentages since the initiation of
this effort; the relative number compared to whites remained roughly equal.
A preliminary assessment of MOTTEP seminars indicated that, although there
were significant changes in knowledge and attitude toward organ transplantation
among African Americans attending seminars, their willingness to sign
donor cards tended to change less. Thus, based on this information, MOTTEP
has further strengthened its use of various strategies to increase the
number of organ donors, particularly among minority populations.
