The meaning of race in science--considerations for Cancer research:
concerns of special populations in the National Cancer Program.
Cancer 1998;82(1):219-25.
“Despite considerable evidence of racial discrimination in our
society, Dr. Krieger noted that remarkably little public health or medical
research has focused on the health consequences of racial discrimination.
She recommended that cancer and public health research move from looking
at how “race” explains “racial differences” in
health to documenting and analyzing the health consequences of race relations
and racial discrimination. This requires, at a minimum, the routine collection
of appropriate racial/ethnic and socioeconomic data in public health databases.
More detailed studies are also needed that use sound measures to capture
the social meanings or racial/ethnic position across the life span.”
“Dr. Richard Boxer emphasized that that one’s health cannot
be viewed in the abstract and is affected by many factors, including the
attitudes of health-care providers.”
