The effect of race and sex on physicians’ recommendations for
cardiac catheterization.
J Am Geriatr Soc 1999;47(11):1390.
This letter suggests that physicians should respond to demonstrated racial
differences in the use of cardiac procedures by "seriously confronting
and redressing our biases." It also notes that Shulman et al. (N
Engl J Med 1999;340(8):618-26) demonstrated that there was only 75% agreement
among experts on indices of probability of disease and a 50% rate of agreement
among physicians in general. Thus, the suggestion is also made that physicians
should respond to this article by defining the indications of and contraindications
to procedures such as coronary angiography.
